Autumn and Shawn’s Switzerland elopement with family was a low-key day filled with an epic adventure in Europe complete with a gondola ride to incredible views near a charming mountain town nestled in the Alps. Keep reading to learn more about this intimate destination wedding in Europe.

How Autumn & Shawn Decided to Plan an Elopement in Switzerland

The early stages of elopement planning are always some of the most exciting. Getting to meet a couple for the first time and hearing about their love story and dreams for their elopement day always gets me so excited! When I first met Autumn and Shawn they shared with me how much they both valued quality time and how much they loved getting to travel and explore new countries together. Right away, I knew their elopement location would be super special. I mean, these two got engaged on Mt Rainier, so how could they not want even more epic views for their wedding day?

The couple ultimately decided to plan a Switzerland elopement and when I asked them “Why Switzerland?” they told me that they chose this location, not only because it was one they had always planned on visiting, but because Autumn especially loved seeing the way Shawn takes in a new view and they couldn’t imagine one any more beautiful than the mountains in Switzerland.

Autumn & Shawn’s Adventurous Switzerland Elopement with Family

Autumn and Shawn are the type of people who don’t like a lot of attention and they prioritize experience over things, so for their Switzerland elopement, we took a casual, “no pressure” type of approach. The couple invited a few of their closest loved ones (some of which had never traveled outside of the country before) to join them for a small, destination wedding in Europe.

The couple started their day off getting ready separately followed by a sweet first look outside their Airbnb in Lauterbrunnen. The day was overcast and rainy, but that didn’t stop these two (or their guests) from going with the flow and embracing the weather.

The day before, we had scouted around to find the best accessible location for their ceremony and though it required a train trip and a cable car ride, we were met with incredible views and everyone got to experience a bit of adventure along the way. Scouting locations before the wedding day is something I always like to do when visiting a new area. This allows us to make sure we have a solid location as well as backup locations in case plans change unexpectedly.

Erika, from The Greatest Adventure Weddings, officiated their ceremony and after Autumn and Shawn said ‘I Do’ we all ducked inside the lodge to hide from the rain. While we waited for the weather to change, the couple cut cake and their family shared a champagne toast to celebrate the newlyweds.

Before heading back down the mountain, Autumn and Shawn went on a short hike and exchanged private vows for just the two of them. Then, we all rode back down the mountain on the gondola. This was such a fun addition to the wedding day and made it so easy for us to experience multiple locations in a single day.

Why Switzerland for Your Elopement?

I can’t think of too many places that beat the incredible scenery and breathtaking views that can be found in Switzerland. Eloping in Switzerland, especially in the Jungfrau Region, has many benefits, some of which are its accessibility and easy-to-navigate transportation. Of course, there are also incredible views and peaceful mountain towns such as Interlaken that offer dozens of hiking trails and adventure activities for your special day. If you don’t feel like going on a long hike or adventure, many, easily accessible views within short walking distance (or a gondola ride) will give you an incredible backdrop without all the effort of a multi-day hiking/camping elopement.
